Learn2b Active launches in Corby
Learn2b Active is a new pilot project developed by Learn2b, Northamptonshire Sport and Corby Borough Council, providing a community-based intervention of informal learning with physical activity. The programme is specifically aimed at people who are experiencing poor mental health, particularly mild to moderate disorders such as depression, anxiety and stress.
Launched in January and delivered over 12 weeks, Learn2b Active provides an opportunity for participants to discover how physical activity can lead to a greater sense of wellbeing, and how it can act as a medical intervention. It combines structured educational and physical activity sessions, with each week offering a number of activity ‘taster’ sessions delivered by coaches and instructors from across the county.
I have taken part in other Learn2b courses but I like the way this course is run over 12 weeks because it allows us all to get to know each other and make friendships.
The course, currently being rolled out at the Hazelwood Neighbourhood Centre in Corby, has included activities such as boxercise, badminton, Nordic walking, table tennis and walking football. Upon completion of the 12 week programme there will be an option to progress on to a Sports Leaders Qualification, enabling participants to get involved in the community through volunteering leadership opportunities.
“I know that when I attend a Learn2b course, the tutors are knowledgeable, friendly and have an understanding for people with mental health conditions”.
Early feedback has been overwhelmingly positive and thoughtful, with a number of participants agreeing the range of activities on offer and the chance to meet new people were the best elements of the course.
One Learn2b Active pilot participant said:
I have really enjoyed this course so far – trying different activities with likeminded people in a safe and non-threatening environment has been really good.
Another participant said:
[Previously] I would probably avoid joining a team sport, club or group class because I wouldn’t have the confidence. I was apprehensive to join this course at first but, as it was Learn2b, I knew the people in the group would have similar issues like me.
Learn2b is part of First for Wellbeing’s emotional wellbeing service, and offers a range of free recovery-focused courses open to anyone who has experienced mental health concerns.
